Making safari memories for the whole family

Safaris have a reputation as kid-unfriendly experiences, but nothing could be further from the truth. Travelling on safari with the whole family can be a wonderful bonding experience, as well as giving your little ones an unsurpassed experience of the wild that many of their peers will never have. Here’s the Kambaku Lodges’ top tips for mixing kids and safaris.

Know your family

You know your family best. You know how long they can sit still, what activities interest them, and what sparks their imagination best. You also know how long their attention spans are. This means you’re perfectly placed to know what activities are going to appeal to the kids the most. If they struggle to sit still for long periods, a game drive might not be the best for them, but an active and engaging bushwalk might be the perfect vehicle to stimulate and engage them.

The best news of all is that most safari lodges in the Timbavati Game Reserve have a very structured approach to the days. This is done to ensure guests have the best possible experience, and the best chances of spotting wildlife. This same structured flow to the day, while still allowing you a little flexibility to ‘do you’, is perfect for keeping kids happy and enjoying the trip.

Picking the right lodge for you

Most Greater Kruger National Park accommodation will accept kids above 6 (or another set age), but not every game lodge makes special concessions for little ones. Those that do generally advertise themselves as ‘family-friendly’. So picking the right match is key when travelling with a family. If you have older teens, almost any destination will serve you well. For younger kids, opt for a family-friendly game lodge that will have activities geared for kids already on the roster. Often, there will also be kiddie-friendly infrastructure like rooms or playgrounds at these lodges, too.

The Kambaku Lodges’ have fully family-friendly options, and we offer a full kids program to help enrich and entertain the youngest members of your family.

Safari activities your kids will enjoy

Not only does Kambaku Safari Lodge come with a playroom, pool and variety of on-sight and in-house kiddies activities to keep young minds entertained, but we’ve specially tailored some safari activities for the young ones, too. After all, the thrill of the hunt and kill that enraptured many adult visitors isn’t necessarily what your kids will enjoy. That said, however, do be aware that game drives take place in the theatre of nature, and your guide can’t control the natural rhythms of the wild. If you opt to take older children on a game drive with you, please be sure it’s an activity that they will enjoy. We do also offer a childminding service for those of you who don’t think game drives and other activities suitable for your littlest family members.

They certainly won’t have time to get bored! Kids can learn to make a bow or katty, how to identify and take casts of animal spoor (footprints), go frogging and birding with our knowledgeable experts, grasp the basics of tracking through dung spitting, learn more about the diverse insect world and even a little about traditional jewelry making! For kids more orientated towards exploring the natural world and nature conservation, we also have an exciting star talk and the opportunity for them to join us as a Junior Ranger for the day.

Africa is for everyone

Old or young, there’s so much to be gained from a Kruger National Park safari lodge experience. Awaken a passion for life and the outdoors in your children, and let the many joys of a family safari experience help you strengthen the bonds of love and life you share. Safari travel with a family can be one of the most enriching experiences you’ll ever have, so don’t be afraid to talk to the Kambaku Lodges team about your family today.

Kambaku’s spirit and history 1

Kambaku’s spirit and history

Meet the Magnificent Seven- experience a taste of Kambaku’s spirit and history

The majestic bull elephant, heavy ivory tasks flashing in the early dawn light of the bush, has become an iconic symbol of South Africa and her wildlife. In fact, the elephant is revered through a host of cultures as a symbol of strength and power, a loyal, smart spirit fiercely protective of its own. Even the South African coat of arms features elephant tusks to represent wisdom, strength, moderation and eternity. These spectacular creatures are no strangers to safari lodges in the Greater Kruger Park area, but did you know that Kambaku Lodges have an extra-special connection to these majestic beings?

The Magnificent Seven and their legacy

Kambaku Lodges in the Timbavati still honour the legacy of the ‘Magnificent Seven’. These seven bull elephants all had massive tusks, each weighing more than 50kg, earning them their affectionate nickname. They became the poster-children for the conservation efforts in the Kruger during the 80s, with a series of special portraits commissioned from celebrated wildlife artist Paul Bosman. These were accompanied by illustrated articles from the Park’s Senior Research Officer.

The public adored them, but their time in the public eye was short. Although most of these magnificent beasts lived well into their fifties, their time in the public spotlight was only around 5 years. They were so beloved, however, that as each of these mighty elephants passed, efforts were made to recover their tusks and skulls for preservation. Their legacy lives on until today, with the Elephant Hall Museum at Letaba Rest Camp holding the tusks of Dzombo, Kambaku, João, Mafunyane, Ndlulamithi, Shawu and Shingwedzi. Prints of Paul Bosman’s iconic portraits can also still be purchased, too. But have you spotted our personal legacy with these great beasts?

The Kambaku Spirit lives on

While most of the Magnificent 7 were lucky enough to pass from natural causes, 2 were the sad victims of the poaching activity that even then the Kruger Park Conservancy worked so hard to eradicate. Kambaku, one of the proudest of these massive bulls, was a solitary elephant by nature, roaming massive distances across the park as a matter of course. He was spotted as far out as Crocodile Bridge! With unique markings and those impressive ivories, his spirit, determination and adventurous spirit, coupled with his love of peaceful solitude, made him the perfect inspiration behind the naming of Kambaku Lodges

The Magnificent Seven were the biggest of their era, and some of the biggest we’ve ever seen. People still remain fascinated today with these glorious animals, the embodiment of strength, grace, intelligence and loyalty. The legend of Kambaku lingers on through the naming of our lodges and a new generation of ‘big tuskers’ flourish!- Kambaku’s stellar spirit lives on every day at both lodges – It’s both an honour and a privilege to carry forward the legacy of this magnificent beast and his brethren for new generations.

A bright new future and a beloved past at Kambaku Game Lodge

Here at Kambaku Safari Lodge, it’s not just about the beauty of the Timbavati Game Reserve that cradles us, or even just about the spectacular wildlife we see every day. It’s about the whole experience. You may arrive as strangers, but you’ll leave as firm friends. Each and every day is a chance to experience travel at its most transformative. Our proud history is an important part of our present excellence, so why not join us for a quick trip down memory lane?

Humble roots

The land the lodge stands on today was once a humble hunter’s camp on the farm Joubertshoop. These simple roots took their first steps towards the lodge we know and love in the 1980s, when the camp was leased as Cheetah Trails Game Lodge. This may have been the same gorgeous vistas that would become the Timbavati Private Game Reserve, but the accommodation (then) was no luxury! Without the embrace of the protective Timbavati, wildlife at the time was scarce, and service from the colourful owners even scarcer. This spicy (but eminently dubious) first experience as a lodge blazed the trail for the Kambaku of today… but fortunately, a brighter future was forged.

It all started with a dream

The property changed hands a few times, coming back to a more loving and respectful base that saw it thrive and expand. The modern Kambaku Safari Lodge, however, was truly born in June 2000, when then-owners Clive and Tanya Gerber bought this pristine section of the now-formed Timbavati Private Game Reserve as their own. This purchase fulfilled Clive’s lifelong dream. They kept the name ‘Kambaku’, given to the lodge in earlier years to honour one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ bull elephants who roamed the nearby Kruger Park in the 70s and 80s.

This powerful beast, well noted for his unique markings and magnificent tusks, loved his solitary existence, venturing over incredible distances from the Timbavati right through to Crocodile Bridge. While Kambaku passed away in 1985, his legacy of adventure, peaceful solitude and glory live on in the Kambaku Safari Lodge spirit.

These early steps towards the Kambaku of today were not without struggles, however- Clive tragically lost his life in a helicopter accident shortly thereafter. While his grieving widow took the time to recover, Kambaku was left in the hands of caring tenants, who nurtured the seed that Clive’s dream had planted until Tanya herself returned to take over the lodge again in 2007.

Exciting renovations spark a new life

While the lodge had been well nurtured by those tenants through its early years, it was time for big upgrades and changes. Kambaku’s chance to shine anew had come! The Manning Family, as Tanya had re-married, nurtured Kambaku through some exciting changes, refurbishing the lodge completely into something closer to the luxury accommodation you’ll recognise today. It was these upgrades that would cement our status as one of the best game lodges in the Greater Kruger National Park. Staff and ranger accommodation were upgraded too. From solar power to all the mod-cons, great care was taken to ensure the lodge was sustainable, ethical and respectful to the gorgeous natural environment surrounding us while still remaining a luxurious guest experience.

But change leads us ever onward, and the lodge was entrusted to the loving care of Bryce and Nicola. Determined to raise their children in an environment that supported our gorgeous animal heritage, and allowed it to thrive, the Kambaku spirit and dream lives on in their fresh, modern approach. Today the Kambaku family has expanded well beyond the Timbavati borders, offering three stellar locations that all pay careful homage to the rich ecological landscapes that formed them. A legacy everyone can be proud of, indeed.

It’s time to experience the Kambaku Safari Lodge of the future, and share a glass with Bryce and Nicola at our flagship reserve. A place with no limits, open doors, and an overwhelming love for the gorgeous vistas of Africa. A place where you can live… the Kambaku way.

The magic of Timbavati Game Reserve

Timbavati Private Game Reserve, part of the greater reserve chain in the Kruger Park area, was founded on the principles of preserving this pristine landscape for later generations. With slow, ecologically sound efforts, an area once suffering the beginning blight of man’s intrusion into wildlife zones has been allowed to flourish in its natural ecological glory, making Timbavati one of the few areas of ‘pristine wild’. Many diverse and rare wildlife species can be found here, along with the iconic Big 5. In the early ‘90s, fences between Timbavati and the Kruger Reserve were removed, further encouraging natural migration patterns for the animals.  Experience the very best Africa has to offer, in a location that’s become synonymous with safari.

Kambaku Safari Lodge offers an unsurpassed wildlife experience for the entire family. Every day is your perfect chance to experience travel at its most transformative in one of the most mesmerizing landscapes in the world. We are proud to offer some of the best family-friendly accommodation in the Greater Kruger Park area, all livened with the magic touch of our hospitable staff and gorgeous location.
